Energy improvement activities are observed through online energy monitoring system for electricity, gasoline, LPG and solar power segments. Location of vendor park near the plant also minimizes the energy resource consumption. Target on carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption are set yearly and the process of gap identification and follow-up action is a continuous process. Efficient manufacturing system reduced specific energy consumption per vehicle by over 30% in 2018 as compared to 2015.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Limited, Ramanagaram, is a leading automobile manufacturer with production capacity of upto 3,10,000 units. Energy is monitored on-line through SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system. Energy audit process has been adopted by the plant and external auditors are employed for monitoring and validation. Energy consumption in manufacturing of vehicles has been reduced by about 12.5% in Plant-I and 10% in Plant-II. Reduction in energy consumption per unit has been set at 10% for year 2020.

National Fertilizers Limited, Bhatinda Unit is manufacturing and marketing neem coated urea, bio fertilizers and other allied industrial products. Changeover to natural gas has reduced specific energy consumption from 9.67 Gcal/MT to 7.48 Gcal/MT of urea. Regular internal audits and analysis, after and before major shut-down, identifies gap areas and improvements. Use of coal combustion catalysts in coal-fired boilers has improved boiler efficiency by about 3%. The company has performed well in PAT cycle - I and got 46,389 tradeable energy saving certificates from Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited, Kolhapur produces internal combustion engines as the main product. Energy consumption benchmarking is conducted continuously within the group and outside nationally and internationally with MNC competitors to effect best specific consumption level. Energy consumption per unit of power generated by product shows decreasing trend from 2.64 Kwh/BHP in 2016 - 17 to 2.35 Kwh/BHP in 2018-19. The unit focuses on training managerial and operational level staff on carbon neutrality.

On-line measurement, analysis and reporting system is in place for segmented areas of significant energy use. Specific energy consumption has improved by 5% during the period 2015-19. PAT Cycle-1 target was to achieve, and attained 22,203 numbers of energy saving certificates from BEE. Process and technology improvement is continuously carried out for improving energy efficiency of the plant.

Regular programmes on energy efficient management are conducted for executives through external experts. Mandatory energy audit was conducted in 2015 and special audit for compressed air, steam traps has been conducted in 2019. An investment of Rs. 137 crores for steam and power system saved 4,598 MT imported coal. Energy conservation measures are implemented and financial impact on production cost per tonne of product are published in the Annual Report.

The general office at Pantnagar is a gold-rated green building, a testament to the unit's efforts to reduce energy consumption and boost energy efficiency. Energy policy supports energy performance and climate change mitigation. KWH per vehicle has been considered as the plant level Energy Performance Indicator (EnPI). Reductions in fuel, electricity and water and carbon footprint are their special features. Comparison with the energy base line performance, target energy performance indicators and benchmarks are clearly defined at the corporate and plant level. Energy efficiency measures have improved the overall performance in all areas. Spicer India Private Limited is a leading supplier of axles, driveshafts, drivetrain products and genuine service parts. Regular energy audits are being conducted annually for the past three years. Baseline performance, target setting, performance indicators and benchmarking have been done for all the processes. Energy efficiency measures are being taken in all the process areas such as: LED light fixing on shop floor, compressor power consumption reduction, downsizing of motors, elimination of chillers and optimizing power packs and power factor improvement on machines.

The Ramco Cements Limited, Alathiyur Works produces Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), Pozzolana Portland Cement (PPC) and Slag Cement (PSC). Specific Electric Energy Consumption in KW/tonnes of cement - (2014-15) 73.74, (2015-16) 70.29 and (2016-17) 67.66 i.e., a reducing trend. Total CO2 emission has been reduced by 38%. National Fertilizers Limited (NFL), a Public Sector Undertaking has its Nangal Unit on Chandigarh-Una highway. Environment Performance Indicators (EnPI) have been identified systematically. Target settings are based on data of actual performance. Energy performance is demonstrated company-wide and is on a positive trend. Monitoring and measurement of energy is done in all areas on a daily basis. The unit has promoted: Installation of Gas Turbine Generator (GTG) along with Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG), Replacement of Steam Turbine of BFW pump in Ammonia Plant and Phase-wise replacement of CFL to LED light fittings.

Online energy monitoring system is being used effectively i.e. even 1.5% change in any process energy consumption is significant and analysed. Benchmarking in Energy Intensity Index (Actual Energy/Standard Energy) is done every two years and remedial action taken. NTPC Limited, Ramagundam Super Thermal Power Station has 2600 MW of thermal generation and 10 MW of solar power generation. Energy Performance Indicators (EnPI) include heat rate i.e., Kcal/Kwhr, specific oil consumption Ml/Kwh and auxiliary power consumption Kwh/Kw of generated power. Important energy saving work done includes: conversion of conventional motors to an energy efficient version, internal coating of old cooling water pumps for increased efficiency, heat rate improvement and conversion of conventional lights to LED light pipes. Heat rate reduced from 2361 Kcal/Kwhr to 2353 Kcal/Kwhr (resulting in saving of worth Rs. 3 Crore).

Management review on energy performance is carried out on a daily basis. RSWM Limited, Kharigram, Rajasthan of LNJ Bhilwara Group, is one of the largest textile manufacturers in the country. The company manufactures and supplies grey & dyed synthetic yarn in different blend & count range. Energy efficiency projects of last five years include: Inverter installation on Chinese ring frame P Fan motor; Power Factor Improvement Plan, Inverter Installation-on 400 KG & 300 Dyeing Machines, on 6 TPH Boilers ID Fan, and 75 KW MA Fan of Blow Room Luwa Filter in SJ 11. The company has prepared Energy Management System Manual.

The initiatives for energy reduction include improvement in manufacturing practices, use of energy efficient LED lights, replacement of old centrifugal compressors, optimization of paint shop capacity and replacement of inefficient Natural Gas fired direct heating oven. Electrical energy saving for 2015-16 was 3.60 million KWh/year and cost saving Rs. 309 lakh (2015-16). Considering other fuel savings, total cost saved due to energy saved was Rs. 394.27 lakh for 2015-16. Lucas TVS Ltd, a leading automobile ancillary unit, produces OEM and replacement parts and is certified to ISO 50001. The company has focused on Energy Audit of each sub process and has identified root causes for high energy consumption. Each one of the causes was categorized for strategic operations, compliance reporting gap with attached level of risk. Green power is extensively used for replacing grid power. Electrical energy saving for 2015-16 was 7.16 million KWh and cost saved due to electrical energy was Rs. 54.42 lakh (2015-16).

Some of important energy conservation projects are Syngas compressor turbine block replacement, Steam super-heater damper plate modification, York refrigeration compressor (motor driven) hooked up with GC-601 steam driven compressor, Use of combustion catalyst etc. 37,318 tradable Energy Saving Certificates (ESCerts) have been issued by BEE. It has reduced Carbon footprint progressively. Electrical energy saving in 2015-16 was 10.475 million KWh and cost saved in 2015-16 was Rs. 860.962 lakh. Schneider Electric Infrastructure Limited is a leading power distribution equipment and product manufacturer. It has been certified for ISO 50001. The specific energy consumption in 2014-15 showed a reduction of 40%. The energy audit results indicated that an investment of Rs. 64.2 lakh resulted in a saving of Rs. 49.5 lakh per year. The company has attained reduction in energy consumption through using new technology for manufacturing like advanced manufacturing technology, digital manufacturing and flexible manufacturing. Its efficient product line supports energy efficiency in electricity transmission and distribution network.

It has a strict monitoring and audit program for water, energy IMS, sustainability IMS and environment management system. This fifty year old plant successfully reduced specific energy consumption by 50%. Specific steel consumption and coal consumption has also reduced gradually. During BEE PAT Cycle - I, ESCert earned were equivalent to Rs. 13, 201 (2012-15). Electrical energy saving achieved due to implementation of energy improvement measures for 2015-16 was 5.445 million KWh and cost saving was Rs. 272.3 lakh. Considering fuel savings, total cost saving was Rs. 540 lakh for 2015-16. NTPC Limited, Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station is a power generation unit of the largest power producing utility in the country. It has an installed generating capacity of 4,760 MW. It has installed on-line energy management system to closely monitor energy performance. It has invested Rs. 85 lakhs (in 2016-17) and Rs. 93 lakh (in 2015-16) for saving electrical power. It has achieved BEE PAT Cycle - I targets and ESCerts to the extent of 33729. Electrical energy savings for FY 2015-16 was 27.44 million KWh and cost saved was Rs. 411.6 lakh.

Specific Electrical Energy consumption 1.590 Units/Kg (in 2012-13) reduced to 0.945 unit/Kg (40% reduction) in 2016-17; Specific steam consumption 4.45 Kg/Kg reduced to 1.78 Kg/Kg (60% reduction); Specific water consumption 8.57 Ltr/Kg reduced to 2.37 Ltr/Kg (72% reduction); Specific Coal consumption 0.96 T/Kg reduced to 0.36 T/Kg (62% reduction) in the above 4 years. Energy management systems alert about excess energy consumption online/SMS is in place and corrective action is taken online.
